Few things confuse travellers more than airline refunds. Two passengers on the same flight can get completely different amounts back, and one of them may get nothing but a voucher. The difference is almost always the fare type printed on the ticket. This guide explains how refunds work on the airlines that fly from Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi, so you know what to expect before you pay.
1. Your fare type decides your refund
Airlines sell the same seat at several fare types, sometimes called fare families or brands. The cheapest type is the most restricted and the most expensive is fully flexible. For example, Emirates sells Economy Special, Saver, Flex and Flex Plus: Flex Plus is its fully flexible, unrestricted fare with no refund fee, while the cheaper fares carry penalties or are not refundable at all.
Qatar Airways works the same way: Economy Comfort tickets get a fee-free refund and unlimited free date changes, while Lite and Classic are more restricted. Always ask which fare type you are buying, not just the price.
2. Cash refund vs airline credit
Low-cost airlines often refund to a wallet or voucher instead of your bank. flydubai issues cancellation refunds as a flydubai voucher. flynas credits the balance to your Nas Wallet, valid for one year. flyadeal keeps cancelled fly+ and flyMax fares as wallet credit valid for three months.
Some let you choose. Air Arabia’s Value fare can be refunded as credit for AED 100 or in cash for AED 300 (on flights from, to or via the UAE), while its Basic fare is credit-only. Fly Jinnah’s Value fare on domestic routes costs PKR 4,500 for credit or PKR 12,000 for a cash refund.
- Cash refund: money returns to the original payment method after the penalty.
- Credit / voucher: value stays with the airline for future flights, usually for the same passenger only.
- Non-refundable: only certain unused taxes may be returned.
3. What is deducted from a refund
A refund is the fare you paid, minus the airline’s cancellation penalty, minus any non-refundable taxes. PIA, for example, publishes country-by-country charges; for travel from Pakistan to Europe the refund charge is USD 80 and the no-show charge USD 90. Airblue deducts the refund fee shown on your e-ticket and pays the balance only to the original form of payment.
4. Deadlines matter
Most airlines stop accepting cancellations shortly before departure. Air Arabia Basic and Value fares cannot be cancelled within 24 hours of the flight, flynas allows cancellations up to 4 hours before, and flyadeal fly+ needs 3 days’ notice. Once a flight departs without you, it becomes a no-show, which is usually the most expensive outcome.
5. Partly used tickets and Umrah fares
If you fly the outbound and cancel the return, the airline recalculates the fare as a one-way ticket, which is often almost the full price, so partial refunds are small. Some special fares cannot be partly refunded at all: PIA Umrah tickets are sold as round trips only and half-used Umrah tickets are not refundable. Airblue does not allow partial refunds on connecting-flight bookings.
6. Involuntary refunds are different
If the airline cancels or significantly changes your flight, the normal penalties do not apply. You can usually choose a free rebooking or a refund. Because we issued your ticket, our team contacts the airline and processes this for you.
